Onnie Strother maintains an art studio at Riker Hill in Livingston, NJ.

His life’s work has been inspiring and teaching young people about art as well as educating people of all ages about the Black experience in America. He is a former art and art history teacher with degrees in fine art, art education, and administration and supervision. He has had a storied career of 24 years as an art instructor at Columbia High school in the South Orange Maplewood School District. Onnie grew up in Newark, attending art classes at the Newark Museum on Saturdays at the age of nine, and later attending Barringer High School. Upon graduating from high school, Onnie attended the New York School of Visual Arts on a scholarship. Afterwards, he attended Rutgers University and became certified as an art teacher, which led to being hired at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ. There, he had a storied career for 24 years. At the invitation of Newark Arts High School principal Eleta J. Caldwell, he became the art department chair there. It was a position he held until retiring in 2008. Since that time, Onnie has focused on curating and exhibiting his own art at many venues in the region. He currently teaches printmaking at the WAE Center, a facility for the developmentally disabled in Livingston, NJ. while continuing to create and exhibit his art. The subjects of his work in various styles are derived from the media, popular music, and political and social issues.

His primary focus is print making consisting of lino cuts and monoprints, photography, and mixed media pieces, which at times combine these multiple elements. This has led him to create various series. Some of these are Gospel Divas, The Tire series, Newspaper Vendors, and his current photographs of the closed site of Bethlehem Steel. Onnie has received grants from The National Endowment for the Humanities and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. He is an acclaimed historian and lecturer of art history and Black history.

Artist Statement:
I have never wanted to be anything other than a teacher and an artist. My granddad used to say, “Find something that you’re good at, something that you like to do, and you will never have to work.” Well, don’t believe it! Both teaching and creating art demand dedication and hard work. Still, I can say as an artist that I love what I do.  As a teacher, I get to share that love with others.

All this fits nicely into my personality. I like to talk a lot. I enjoy sharing what I have learned. I was born in the right place at the right time for my chosen path. Brick City in the 1950s and 1960s was a cultural mecca, an amazing place to be for a Black artist. There was Spirit House and Mosque, the Newark Museum and the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, and the Bamberger’s Department store I saw the art of Romare Bearden and Michelangelo’s Moses, before it was taken to the 1964 World's Fair. (Newark was da Bomb!) Music in every variety filled the city; I couldn’t wait to be a part of it.     As soon as I was old enough, I attended Saturday Junior Art School, Arts High, NSFIA, and Rutgers University. Along the way, I have had the opportunity to teach and show artwork in many of these institutions. In my own way, recording, teaching, and remembering -I can give something back.

When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. Concerts in America Presents: Edith Pageaud

Concerts in America Presents: Edith Pageaud

Edith Pageaud’s story is one of extraordinary talent and dedication. Beginning her musical journey at just seven, she rose rapidly to prominence—winning numerous national competitions and earning her Diplôme d’Études Musicales in classical guitar from the Paris CRR by age fourteen under the tutelage of Gérard Abiton.

Renowned for her dazzling technique and deeply expressive artistry, Pageaud has captivated audiences around the world. Her recent first prizes at the Drome de Guitares (2022), Roland Dyens International (2023), and Florence International Guitar Competition Alvaro Company (Italy) affirm her status as one of today’s most exciting young guitarists.

In this recital, Pageaud invites listeners on a journey through centuries and styles — from the meditative minimalism of Philip Glass to the Baroque intricacies of Heinrich Biber, from Schubert’s lyrical poetry to the transcendent spirituality of Messiaen. Her program explores the emotional and expressive potential of the guitar in works both intimate and grand.

Trans Youth Speak

Trans Youth Speak

Right now across the country, transgender youth are under direct attack—more than 600 anti-trans bills have been introduced in 2025 alone, and at least 26 states now enforce bans or severe limits on gender-affirming care for minors.

That’s why trans and nonbinary youth need supportive adults around them now more than ever.

If you are a parent, guardian, educator, coach, community leader, or just someone who wants to do the right thing, this event is your chance to lean in.

• You’ll hear from trans youth in our community as they speak openly about their experiences, hopes, struggles and victories.

• You’ll gain insight into what real support looks like: meaningful action, affirmation and allyship.

• You’ll join a community committed to showing up—not just for a night, but for the long haul.

YOUR PRESENCE MATTERS!

The courageous youth on our panel will be opening up and sharing their most personal stories. Your attendance—your willingness to listen, to stand, to ask questions, to commit—sends a powerful message that they are NOT alone.

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

Maplewood Arts and Culture presents a film screening: SHE CRiED THAT DAY

A documentary by independent filmmaker
Amanda Erickson, followed by Q&A with Salka'Tula Bondoc Mafla

Free Event, RSVP Required

SYNOPSIS
Christine Means and her family have spent years questioning the circumstances surrounding her sister's death.  In 2019, a renewed sense of hope for justice places Christine at the center of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives movement in New Mexico.  Against all odds, this is a story of love, spirit, and the unwavering power of Indigenous women and allies who refuse to let their loved ones be forgotten.

Amanda Erickson is born from the San Carlos Apache of the White Water Clan on her father’s side. But, growing up outside of her community, she often wondered about her Indigenous roots. Her journey of reconnection to culture and community would take 38 years and be the catalyst for her first feature documentary, She Cried That Day. Before making her directorial debut, Amanda worked as a non-fiction TV Producer for 15 years, where she created compelling programming for networks like: Travel Channel, National Geographic WILD, Investigation Discovery, and CuriosityStream. Amanda is a member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia, Array Crew, and resident Teaching Artist for newportFILM. Through her company, Sees Clearly Productions, Amanda aims to inspire social change by amplifying issues facing Indigenous communities.

For more information on how to support Native storytelling and Amanda’s documentary, She Cried That Day, check out the film’s website: shecriedthatday.com

Salka’Tula Bondoc Mafla is an Indigenous artist, ecologist, educator, and futurist. Born on Tovangar (Los Angeles) and raised in Lenapehoking (Brooklyn) and Osage Territory (St. Louis) by way of Luzviminda (the Philippine Archipelago) and the Andes of Ecuador, she studies the unique forms of art and life birthed on her ancestral homelands and seas. Centering her scientific study at the intersection of Black liberation, Indigenous sovereignty, anti- and de-colonial ecological and museum studies, and Tropical biodiversity and rematriation, Salka’Tula disrupts the traditional colonial foundations of ecology and evolution by creating space for historically excluded and erased peoples and original ecological knowledge. As an artist, Salka’Tula writes stories and uses the stage and screen, movement, music, and photography to tell stories that span generations of living in good relation with Pachamama, with each other, and with ourselves. Her stories are love letters to the people of the Tropics and Migration that celebrate Afro+Indigenous joy and ways of being. And through it all, Salka'Tula dreams in Indigenous futures.

The Gratitude Graffiti Project is a daily practice of intentional appreciation through interactive art. Our mission is to create THE REMINDER—a visual and participatory experience that invites everyone in the community to pause and reflect. By transforming everyday spaces into Gratitude Stops, we encourage passersby to engage creatively and mindfully, taking a moment each day to acknowledge what they are grateful.

If you love old-school community charm, we’ve got a show for you! It’s not a contest and there’s no winner, just a low-stakes opportunity to showcase local talent with heartwarming, small-town variety fun!

The MAPSO FAMILY FOLLIES delights all ages with multi-cultural and multi-generational acts–no solos!–the more quirky, creative, and unpredictable the better. Last year’s sold-out, standing-room-only show at The Woodland had a line-up of parent/kid acts—including a family circus—plus a hilarious crew of neighbors, and fabulous local groups of singers, dancers, and even a roller-skating chicken!

The MAPSO FAMILY FOLLIES is made possible by the invaluable efforts and generous support of Andrea Teutli, Miriam R. Perez, and Stacey Ross-Trevor of the Division of Arts & Culture of Maplewood Township. Tori Chickering returns as Co-Producer/Director/Emcee along with Katy Chapman as Co-producer, Cat Delett as Talent Coordinator, Ridley McIntyre as Stage Manager, and Elizabeth Sarkesian heading up Stage/House Crew. Sybil Rodgers returns as our Follies Consultant, with Craig Stout as Designer, Audrey Wade will be our spotlight operator, plus loads more invaluable Team Follies volunteers. It’s so much fun, you really should join us!
