What makes a space into a place?

Deep mapping is a multidisciplinary approach to exploring the layers that give a place meaning. A deep map might include maps and databases alongside photography, writing, painting, archival materials, interviews, or site-specific work. Rather than simply documenting a place, deep mapping asks us to look closely at the histories, stories, memories, people, and experiences that shape it.

Over six weeks, we will explore Maplewood through a creative practice that brings together community, geography, history, memory, research, and personal experience. Working both individually and collaboratively, participants will contribute different perspectives and forms of knowledge to a shared deep map of Maplewood—one that reflects both the town’s history and the community as it exists today.

The workshop meets for 2.5 hours each Wednesday, October 7–November 11, with work from the workshop

culminating in a gallery exhibition in early December.

Open to ages 13–113. No previous art, mapping, or research experience is required.
