Exhibit: Golf Island Revisited

  • Durand-Hedden House and Garden 523 Ridgewood Road Maplewood, NJ, 07040 United States (map)

From 1861-1867 Maplewood’s first developer, NYC druggist John W. Shedden purchased 30 acres around Maple Avenue, mapped home lots and built two “cottages” for sale. He ensured the growth of the town by buying one-acre of land close by and selling it to the Morris and Essex Railroad to build a station, soon named ‘Maplewood Station’. The exhibit displays maps and representative houses tell the history of the Maplewood Country Club and golf course and Maplewood Middle School and feature stories of developers and residents.

The Country Store will be open with inexpensive historic-themed treasures. The event is free; donations are appreciated.
