Maplewood Arts & Culture Presents: Art From The Earth Celebrating Earth Day & Garden State Art Weekend
Maplewood, NJ — In celebration of Earth Day and Garden State Art Weekend, the Maplewood Division of Arts & Culture invites the community to experience Art From The Earth, a vibrant, family-friendly exhibition that explores the beauty and creative potential of natural materials. Featuring the work of Wendy Bellermann, Karis Takaki, and Michelle Kurlan, this immersive exhibition highlights how art can emerge directly from the earth itself.
The exhibition opens on Sunday, April 19 from 11am to 5pm, with light refreshments available throughout the day. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in special programming led by Maplewood artist Wendy Bellermann, who will host educational talks and hands-on workshops at 12pm and 3pm.
Through a rich array of textures and natural pigments, the exhibition showcases Wendy Bellermann’s bold, contemporary cave-style paintings created with real stone and clay, alongside Karis Takaki’s layered works made from earth pigments, soy milk, plant-based colors, and minerals, as well as Michelle Kurlan’s nature-inspired pieces that explore organic forms, texture, and the relationship between materials and the element.
Art From The Earth will remain on view April 25 and April 26 from 2pm to 5pm.
Workshop Sunday, April 19 from 11am to 5pm : Wendy Bellermann’s community participatory workshop, designed for both children and adults. Participants will step back 30,000 years to explore the history of prehistoric cave art, observe how raw materials like stone and clay become vibrant pigments, and create their own artwork using safe, non-toxic materials. This hands-on experience invites attendees to get creative, collaborate on a communal “cave wall,” and engage with art in a fun, educational, and imaginative way.
