In Celebration of Pride Month
Maplewood Arts and Culture Presents:
Troublemakers by Deric Carner

Deric Carner: Troublemakers presents a lineup of gap-mouthed, hole-eyed sculptural faces that are loud, strange, and absolutely not here to behave. Shaped by a life spent moving between cultures and countries, Carner's work explores queer identity and what it means to never quite fit anywhere. In his words: "that experience of displacement mirrors how queer identity has felt to me: always negotiating context, always deciding which parts of myself can be visible and which need to stay protected.”

Community Participation: Visitors are invited to create their own masks and reflect on their relationship between inner identity and outward presentation. These contributions will become part of the exhibition displayed on the gallery walls at the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center.
