Dinah PoKempner
Dinah PoKempner is a ceramic artist with more than thirty years of experience working in clay in studios throughout the New York–New Jersey metropolitan area. Her practice focuses on the functional, bridging craft and art in line with ceramic's long history as one of our most enduring expressive languages. Drawing inspiration from the understated aesthetic and subtle detail of Japanese ceramics and the humanism of English and Scandanavian studio crafts, PoKempner’s vessels invite reflection on how beauty inhabits the everyday.
Her surfaces reveal a deep engagement with material process — from fluid wheel-thrown curves to deeply carved and impressed textures — and with the alchemy of glaze, underglaze, and atmospheric effects in a wide palette. Each piece is unique, showing the artist's hand. She is particularly drawn to objects that can be used both for religious/spiritual practice or everyday uses, in that they heighten our sensory awareness and mindfulness. PoKempner teaches and works in her home studio in South Orange.
